Before you start
- Dots are in ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium plans in eligible markets; the first dot is included at no extra cost. Pro availability excludes the EEA, UK and Switzerland at launch, and Enterprise and Edu get Dots through their workspace admins, in beta.
- A dot is set up from the ChatGPT desktop app and can then be used on the web and mobile.
- Create an MCP Ads account and connect the ad accounts you want the dot to see. It only ever sees what you connected there.
Add the connector in ChatGPT
A dot uses the same connectors as ChatGPT, so the setup happens in ChatGPT, once. The MCP Ads plugin is in review for the ChatGPT plugin directory; until it is listed, add it as a custom connector.
- Turn on Developer mode
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Plugins → Browse plugins and turn on Developer mode. Custom connectors need it. In a Business workspace, an admin may have to enable it first.
- Add a custom connector
Name it MCP Ads so it is easy to recognise, and paste the server URL. It is the same URL every client uses.
Custom connector URLhttps://mcp-ads.com/mcp-slim - Sign in through the browser
ChatGPT opens a browser window for the one-time OAuth sign-in. There is no API key or client secret to enter. Use the login that owns your MCP Ads account.
- Let your dot use it
Give your dot access to the MCP Ads app, then ask it which ad accounts it can see to confirm the connection.
This is the only way a dot reaches MCP Ads today: the connector added in ChatGPT. Once the MCP Ads plugin is listed in the ChatGPT plugin directory, it can be added from there instead.
Verify it works
The first call should list the platforms and accounts your sign-in reached. If it lists nothing, the connector is added but no ad account is connected yet; connect one in the MCP Ads dashboard and ask again.
Use the MCP Ads app for every question about my ads, analytics or SEO.
List the ad accounts you can see through it.
Then tell me one thing in my ad accounts I should fix today.Give the dot something to keep doing
A dot works in the background, so the useful setup is a goal with a schedule and a threshold, not a single question. This is the one worth setting up first.
Every Monday at 09:00, use MCP Ads to pull the last 7 days of spend, clicks,
conversions and cost per conversion for every connected ad account. Flag any
campaign with spend and zero conversions. Send me a short summary with one
recommendation per platform. Do not change anything without my approval. You can open the dot’s cloud computer to check what it did, and message it from ChatGPT, Slack or Microsoft Teams to follow up on anything it flags.
Approvals: what a dot will and will not do
- Dots follow ChatGPT’s permissions, and you can add your own rules for which tasks need approval.
- Research a dot does on its own initiative is read-only. Tasks you give it, or schedule, can act, under their own rules and approvals.
- MCP Ads adds its own layer: budgets, statuses and new campaigns go through its confirmation and workspace policy controls, and new campaigns are created paused.
- Reads are unrestricted: reports, audits, search terms, change history, competitor ads.
Troubleshooting
- “Add custom connector” is missing: Developer mode is off, or a Business workspace admin has not enabled it.
- The sign-in window closes and nothing happens: a pop-up blocker stopped the OAuth window. Allow pop-ups for chatgpt.com and add the connector again.
- The dot says it has no MCP Ads tools: the connector is added in ChatGPT but the dot has not been given access to the MCP Ads app yet.
- An account you expected is missing: the login you authorised does not have access to it. Reconnect it from the MCP Ads dashboard.
